Clinical Services Expansion
Lahey Clinic Medical Center - North Shore
Peabody, Massachusetts
LaheyAerialEastLaheyAerialWest

In order to establish a major presence on Boston's North Shore, Lahey Clinic in 1995 called on Taylor & Partners to transform a five-story bank building into a 150,000-square-foot, ten-bed hospital.
Success drove the need to expand the facility. Taylor & Partners responded in 2008-10 with a state-of-the-art three-story, 60,000-square-foot addition, as well as renovations and improvements to 40,000 square feet of the existing facility. The new and renovated areas accommodate ambulatory and specialty clinics; a cancer center; emergency department; laboratory, radiology, and other diagnostic departments; and staff medical education. The addition is designed to allow a further two floors to be added for future programs.

Taylor & Partners worked closely with Lahey staff to draw on their experience with the facility over the past 15 years and their evolving practice, incorporating the latest evidence-based design thinking. The project meets the criteria for an LEED rating. During the design and construction process, Taylor & Partners used BIM technology to manage risks and construction costs.

Newburyport Medical Center
Newburyport, Massachusetts

Anna Jaques Hospital engaged Taylor & Partners to design unique interior build-out projects for three outpatient clinical services that were to be installed in a new three-story professional office building. Working closely with the tenants and administrators at Anna Jaques Hospital, Taylor & Partners completed the projects on a fast-track schedule, within tight budgets. The colorful interiors have been warmly received by staff and patients.

Sophie Gordon Cancer Center
Lahey Clinic Medical Center - North Shore
Peabody, Massachusetts

Taylor & Partners designed the Sophie Gordon Cancer Center to function within Lahey Clinic North Shore. It provides a comprehensive range of medical and surgical care. Board-certified specialists in medical, radiation, and surgical oncology collaborate to deliver sophisticated care to patients in an individualized, compassionate, and secure manner.

The design enables Lahey's multidisciplinary team to call on a full array of state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities, including MRI, CT, ultrasound, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgical services. The cheerful, sunlit new facilities provide a serene, healing setting that assures patient comfort and enhances staff effectiveness.

Kellogg Eye Center
University of Michigan

Ann Arbor, Michigan

The University of Michigan's Kellogg Eye Center responds to the need to expand its clinical and research capabilities to serve the rising volume of patients, in particular the ageing baby-boom population. The new eight-story facility accommodates research, education, and diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Natural light from large windows and glass interior panels brightens clinical spaces, lobbies, and waiting areas.

Taylor & Partners provided the clinical programming, planning, and design expertise for the multidisciplinary design team. To treat conditions in which protocols are developing rapidly - for example, the nationwide surge of diabetes, with its attendant risk of visual impairment - the design provides clinicians and researchers with shared spaces and laboratories to encourage translational collaboration.

Federal Bureau of Prisons
Federal Medical Center
Fort Devens, Massachusetts

The Federal Medical Center is a prison housing male offenders requiring specialized or long-term medical or mental-health care. It also serves as satellite housing for medium-security male inmates. The project recycled the decommissioned Cutler Army Hospital.

Taylor & Partners, in conjunction with the penal architect, TSA, programmed, planned, and designed the 124-bed FMC medical/surgical hospital within the shell of the decommissioned Cutler Army Hospital, and designed a separate new 150-bed psychiatric inpatient facility. The medical/surgical hospital has 112 acute care beds, 12 intensive care beds, 11 dialysis stations, and nuclear medicine, cardiology, pulmonary, and neurology facilities. The psychiatric hospital has one 30-bed admission/seclusion unit, one 30-bed closed unit, and three 30-bed open units. The project presented unusual challenges: not only did the design have to conform to complex security requirements, no Taylor & Partners staff could visit the site, either before, during, or after construction.
